The Knights of the Auto Order Proudly Present:
THE AUTO BODY ESTIMATE: Vol. II, #40, October1999

I'm sad that the swimming season is over. One of my favorite summer activities is taking Gizmo (my 80 pound mutt) to the river. This is great exercise. Perhaps because of my stick-like stature, as soon as I'm in the water he tries to retrieve me, so I have to swim really fast to stay ahead of his mad claw paddling. Eventually I'll stop in chest-deep water and carefully catch him. He'll put his paws on either side of my neck while I hold his back legs, and he'll take in the vista. Occasionally his tiny walnut-sized brain is seized with the Yurtle-instinct and he'll try to climb up on top of my head. This is a reoccurring source of quiet humor among the elderly Asian men fishing along the shore at Afton State Park. I always hope to pass off the scratches on my shoulders and back as a result of some wild lovemaking, but whenever someone notices them (even if they don't know me) they ask if I've been swimming with a dog.

Here's a dog-inspired last minute Halloween costume idea. Get a heavy piece of white paper, cut it to 5 X 30 inches, and tape it around your neck so it looks like the things unfortunate dogs have to wear home from the vet. If anyone asks you about your costume say: "it's not a costume - I was licking myself".

After the brilliant Halloween fun you'll have with that scheme, November might seem a little bleak. Never fear. We'll be celebrating the release of our new CD, A Tribute To Carhenge, at 8:00 PM on Friday, November 19th at the 3M Auditorium at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul. This "Wreck-O-Mended" gig should be a blast - it's a lovely hall, we'll have expanded instrumentation including bassoon, marimba, toy piano, vocalists, and an engorged horn section. There are also rumors of a circus-style dog show opener and a Tom Twiss-run party afterwards (to which you're all invited). We'll play songs from the CD (some of which you've never heard), some old favorites, and a few tunes too new to be on the CD, possibly including one about the cave I'm digging under my cubicle at work.

Tickets will be $10 at the door, but you can get them for $8 in advance. To do so, send a check (payable to Scott Yoho) to the address on the reverse side of this card and I'll pay for the postage to send them back to you. If I get your order too late to send the tickets by mail, I'll give you a call to let you know we'll hold them at the door. If you'd like to attend but funds are scarce, give me a call - we could always trade out for help with the show. Questions or concerns? Call us at 651-699-6393. Along with the release concert, you can be sure we'd love to send you copies of the new CD to fulfill large portions of your holiday shopping needs. Turn this card over for details.

If you are unable to join us on the 19th, or if you're the sort of person for whom one ABE show between now and the new millennium just isn't enough, we'll also play at Christiansen's/Big Vs on Friday, November 5th with Sam Scratch (who at one time actually played a Crops cover). We'll go on around 10:00 PM. We had a lot of fun when we played this low-key hangout back in August. As always, it never hurts to give our hotline a call before heading towards the gig. We hope to see you soon.
